Keeping Girls in School in North Horr

For girls from mobile pastoralist families, the barriers to education stack up quickly: long distances, early marriage, period poverty, and the pull of household work. This project tackles them together.

A newly constructed girls’ dormitory means students no longer have to make dangerous daily journeys or drop out when their families move with the herds. Bursaries cover fees and materials, while a mentorship programme pairs girls with role models and provides menstrual-hygiene support so no girl misses class.

Working with boards of management and community elders, the project also confronts early marriage and FGM head-on — making the case, family by family, that an educated girl lifts an entire community.
