Solar-Powered Boreholes for Laisamis

Diesel-powered boreholes are expensive and prone to breakdown — and when a pump fails in the drylands, an entire community is left without water. This project converts strategic boreholes across Laisamis sub-county to solar power, slashing running costs and eliminating dependence on scarce, costly fuel.

Each site is paired with a trained Water Users Association that manages the scheme, sets fair tariffs, and maintains the equipment. Extended pipelines and livestock troughs bring water closer to homes and grazing areas, cutting the distance women and girls walk to fetch it.

The result is water that is not only cleaner and closer, but sustainable — a system the community can run and afford for years to come.
