Families Rebuilding Lives Through Restocking

When drought swept across Marsabit County in 2022, the toll was catastrophic. In the villages of Antut and Qoloba in Moyale Sub-county, entire livestock herds were wiped out — and with them, the savings, food and status that pastoralist families measure in animals.

For households that had lost everything, recovery could not begin with words alone. It began with goats.

A herd is a livelihood

Through its restocking programme, PACIDA provided drought-affected families with healthy breeding stock, along with animal-health support to keep the new herds alive. For a pastoralist family, a small flock is far more than food — it is income, insurance, and a way back to self-reliance.

From relief to recovery

Restocking is deliberately paired with training in animal husbandry and dry-season feeding so that the gains hold when the next drought comes. Family by family, herd by herd, communities that had been pushed to the edge are rebuilding the lives the drought took from them.
